Designing a Wabi Sabi House in Zanzibar - A Combination of Peaceful Simplicity and Rustic Elegance

The client wanted us to help him with the interior design of a apartment in Zanzibar, which is currently under construction. In cooperation with the architect who works on the construction, we designed the living room, two bedrooms, attic and facades.

What made this project interesting is an unusual architecture and style, which are characteristic of that area. Designing a Wabi Sabi house in Zanzibar for the client was according to his inspirational photos.

Wabi-sabi is a Japanese aesthetic concept that embraces imperfection, transience, and simplicity. In design, it focuses on finding beauty in the natural, imperfect, and aged qualities of objects and spaces.

Wabi-sabi design encourages us to be fully present and mindful in our surroundings. By embracing the simplicity and imperfection of our environment, we cultivate a deeper appreciation for the present moment.

This apartment has two floors and an attic. On the ground floor, there are living area and one master bedroom. In the living room, you can enjoy breathtaking sea views as it seamlessly merges with the dining area.

We strive for simplicity and minimalism in our designs. Our focus is on creating uncluttered spaces that exude a sense of calm and tranquility.

The bedrooms are flooded with natural light, thanks to the wooden floor-to-ceiling windows that invite the outdoors in.

Our designs aim to establish a deep connection with nature. We integrate elements like plants, natural light, and views of the outdoors to create spaces that promote harmony and a sense of being grounded.

The bedroom above the living room has its own terrace, which also has a sea view.

We favor a muted color palette inspired by nature. Earthy tones, soft greens, and gentle grays create a soothing atmosphere that complements the overall wabi-sabi aesthetic.

On the upper levels, we transformed a unique architectural space. Originally planned as a two-level, open area above the second bedroom, we skillfully incorporated a sleeping area and a cozy sitting area, creating a sanctuary that harmonizes relaxation with breathtaking sea views.

We incorporate natural materials such as wood and stone andinto our designs. These materials offer textures, colors, and patterns that showcase their organic origins, adding warmth and character.

The facades of the house blend harmoniously with the lush surroundings by using natural materials such as wood and stone. The integration of these elements creates a sense of relaxation and unity with the environment, allowing you to immerse yourself in the beauty of nature.

We embrace the concept of impermanence and appreciate the beauty that arises from change. Our designs encourage an appreciation of the present moment and the evolving nature of the world around us.

In summary, our wabi-sabi design philosophy aims to create spaces that find beauty in simplicity, imperfection, and the natural world. By incorporating these principles, we strive to create environments that evoke a sense of tranquility, authenticity, and a deep connection to our surroundings.

Wabi-sabi design acknowledges that nothing is permanent. It encourages us to let go of attachments and embrace the natural cycles of growth, decay, and renewal, fostering a sense of acceptance and resilience.

In essence, wabi-sabi design is an aesthetic and philosophical approach that embraces the beauty of imperfection, impermanence, and simplicity. It encourages us to find joy in the ordinary, be present in the moment, and appreciate the natural cycles of life. By incorporating these elements into our designs, we create spaces that are both visually captivating and deeply meaningful!
